Within these white-walled interiors, different spatial encounters are unravelled as one navigates the space, inviting a sense of curiosity and exploration.
An open concept with thoughtful interventions plays with the possibilities of spatial experiences.
In this project, we confronted the challenge of creating barriers to segment the space without minimising its openness.

Upon entering the home, spatial segregation is alluded to by variations in the tactility of the flooring.
Delineated by lowering the ceiling and employing a different paint set, the tapered foyer elicits a sense of enclosure that feels like a welcome embrace. The floor, finished with a pebble wash—a reflection of outdoor flooring—creates a landing between the indoors and outdoors.
The variation in the haptic qualities of the flooring creates divergent sensory experiences alongside a shift in pace upon transitions.

The tactile cues dynamically shift as one navigates and engages with different zones.
As footprint extends beyond the foyer into the home, the flooring smooths into a levelled microcement surface, facilitating a shift in one’s focus to the indoors.
Varying tactility in flooring can help one feel more grounded and centered as they unravel different spatial encounters while moving through their daily routines.

With a mindset to maintain maximal negative space within the common areas, we drew inspiration from Japanese structural design for this lattice shelving system.
Thin slats of wood layered atop one another form a grid of shelves for display, lending opportunity to the space on top of a sense of visual hierarchy.
By eliminating traditional closed cabinets or walls, open-concept shelving brings a sense of spaciousness, accessibility and optimal visibility for showcasing curated collections as part of the overall decor, adding a personalised touch to the space.

These columns were erected in response to the various openings across the wall: one into the kitchen and the other into a corridor leading to the private rooms.
To avoid creating vertical elements flat against the horizontal beams emerging from the ceiling, we exaggerated the depth of the columns in order to negotiate the tension between opposing elements and create a visual boundary between the surfaces.
The protrusion of the vertical element creates definition between horizontal and vertical structures, while adding a dynamic quality and sense of dimensionality to the open space. Reminiscent of the arrangement in the lattice shelving system, this design intervention also contributes to a sense of harmony and cohesion within the space at large.

Rather than interpret minimalism as an absence of colour, muted hues and subtle textures were incorporated to enliven the space.
A visual identity where grey and white tones preside creates a tranquil habitat of raw simplicity, while clean lines and the use of glass panels enhance transparency and visual connectivity.
The space exudes a contemporary and timeless appeal, combining a sense of openness and lightness to create an inviting abode.
